Special Circumstance Appeals

Sometimes your financial situation changes, and your FAFSA may not reflect it. A Special Circumstance Appeal lets ÐßÐßÊÓƵ review your situation to see if your financial aid can be adjusted.

Special circumstances are changes in your financial or family situation that may impact your cost or ability to pay for college. Examples include:

  • Loss of job or reduced income

  • Significant medical or dental expenses

  • Divorce, separation, or death of a parent

  • Other unusual financial situations

  • Contact the Office of Financial Aid – Share your situation with our staff. We will assist you with any next steps. If it is something we can explore further, we will send you a form to complete, a secure link to upload supporting documents, and instructions.

  • Submit Documentation – Fill out the form, write your personal statement explaining your special circumstance, and upload supporting documents via a secure link.

  • Review – We will review all documentation as well as your current FAFSA information to determine whether your circumstance warrants an update to your FAFSA form.  If so, we will update the FAFSA which may result in an adjustment to your financial aid eligibility.

  • The Special Circumstance Appeal process may take at least 3-4 weeks from review to completion.
  • We cannot change the Student Aid Index (SAI) directly, but updating FAFSA information may affect it.

  • Appeals do not guarantee changes to your financial aid.

  • Federal law allows us to consider your current year’s projected income for special circumstances.

Unusual Circumstances

Some students experience unique circumstances that may impact their dependency status and financial aid eligibility.

Unusual circumstances are unique situations that may justify a change to a student’s dependency status. Examples include:

  • Parental abandonment, estrangement, or incarceration

  • Abusive or threatening home environments

  • Human trafficking

  • Other circumstances that prevent a student from contacting their parents

Unusual circumstances do not include:

  • Parents refusing to contribute to education

  • Parents refusing to provide FAFSA or verification information

  • Parents not claiming the student on taxes, or the student being fully self-sufficient

  • Contact the Office of Financial Aid – Share your situation with our staff. We will assist you with any next steps.

  • Submit Documentation – Complete any requested forms and submit any necessary documentation using the secured link provided by our office.

  • Review – We will review all documentation as well as your current FAFSA information to determine whether your circumstance warrants an update to your FAFSA form.  If so, we will update the FAFSA which may result in an adjustment to your financial aid eligibility.

  • This process may take at least 3-4 weeks from review to completion.
  • Completing this process does not guarantee changes to your financial aid.
